DIY Essential Oil Based Remedies for PMS & Menstrual Cramps

Being male, I could never fully understand what women go through every month.

But I did grow up surrounded by women and I’ve developed an appreciation for the trials and tribulations that come with aunt flow’s monthly visit.

So I can’t speak from direct experience here, but I can draw from the knowledge of women who’ve successfully managed their menstrual pains both emotionally and physically.

The following recipes and applications are sourced from those who know best – women who’ve been there and have found relief from their symptoms.

1.) Cramp Prevention Blend

Ingredients:

Directions:

In the Bath

Directions:

  • Fill your tub with water at your desired temperature.
  • In a small non-reactive bowl combine:
    • 1 tsp milk
    • 6 to 10 drops of your prevent cramps blend
  • Add to the tub and disperse
  • Soak for 30 minutes or more, massaging any floating droplets into your skin.

As a Massage

Directions:

As a Warm Compress

Directions:

  • Pour 2 cups warm water in a non-reactive bowl.
  • Then add:
    • 2 drops of marjoram
    • 2 drops clary sage
    • 2 drops lavender
  • Stir well.
  • Next soak a cloth in the mixture, getting just enough so it doesn’t drip. Wring out excess if necessary.
  • Place the warm cloth over your abdomen.
  • Repeat as necessary.

2.) PMS Blend

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Combine oils in a 1/6 oz (5 ml) glass bottle.
  • Shake well to blend.

In the Bath

Directions:

  • Fill your tub with water at your desired temperature.
  • In a small non-reactive bowl combine:
    • 1 tsp milk
    • 6 to 10 drops of your PMS blend
  • Add to the tub and agitate to blend.
  • Soak for 30 minutes or more.
  • Massage any floating droplets into your skin.

3.) Anti-Water Retention Blend

This blend helps to rid the body of excess fluid and reduce feelings of bloating. Apply this blend on day 21 of your cycle, counting from the start of your last period.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Combine oils in a 1/6 oz (5 ml) glass bottle.
  • Shake well to blend.

In the Bath

Directions:

  • Fill your tub with water at your desired temperature.
  • In a small non-reactive bowl combine:
    • 1 tsp milk
    • 6 to 10 drops of your Anti-Water Retention Blend
  • Add to the tub and agitate to blend.
  • Soak for 30 minutes or more.
  • Massage any floating droplets into your skin.

4.) Dissolve Irritability Blend

Directions:

  • Combine oils in a 1/6 oz (5 ml) glass bottle.
  • Shake well to blend.

Roll-on Application

Directions:

  • Drip 12 to 15 drops of your dissolve irritability blend into a 10 mL glass roller-ball bottle
  • Fill the remainder of the bottle with a carrier oil. I prefer fractionated coconut oil for my roll on blends.
  • Once finished and capped shake to mix.
  • Apply on temples, wrists and collarbones as needed.

  • Fill your tub with water at your desired temperature.
  • In a small non-reactive bowl combine:
    • 1 tsp milk
    • 6 to 10 drops of your Anti-Water Retention Blend
  • Add to the tub and agitate to blend into the water.
  • Soak for 30 minutes or more.
  • Massage any floating droplets into your skin.

5.) More Simple Bath Blends

Below you’ll find a variety mixtures to address specific issues.

Listless / Apathetic

Ingredients:

  • 18 drops grapefruit
  • 10 drops clary-sage
  • 2 drops narcissus 

Combine oils and apply 7-10 drops to your bath.

Irritable / Short Tempered

Ingredients:

  • 15 drops bergamot
  • 10 drops nutmeg
  • 5 drops geranium

Combine oils in a dropper bottle and add 7-10 drops to your bath.

Gloomy / Downhearted

Ingredients:

  • 12 drops clary-sage
  • 9 drops rose
  • 9 drops bergamot

Combine oils in a dropper bottle and add 7-10 drops to your bath.

Spasmodic Pain

Ingredients:

Combine oils in a dropper bottle and add 7-10 drops to your bath.

Congestive Pain

Ingredients:

Combine oils in a dropper bottle and add 7-10 drops to your bath.
