As already noted, a head massage is a great way to remedy hair conditions like hair loss.

Herbalized massage oils have been a staple in Ayurvedic traditions for centuries as a way to maintain healthy, thick and lustrous hair.

I’ve already covered some DIY essential oil based recipes above. This Ayurvedic healthy hair oil could be a great alternative or a replacement carrier oil with essential oils added to it. This oil stimulates the hair follicles, and the nourishing herbs that it includes can penetrate the scalp and strengthen and thicken the hair at its roots.

The main herbs in this blend that have an affinity for oils are Bhringaraj (“the ruler of hair” in Ayurveda), Amalaki and Brahmi (Gotu Kola). They are blended with a base of sesame and coconut oils then infused with hibiscus flower essence.

Use it on a weekly basis to significantly improve the health of your hair, calm your mind and prevent hair loss.

Consume plenty of healthy omega 3 essential fatty acids

cod liver oil

Essential fatty acids, especially omega 3 in the forms of EPA and DHA, are fantastic for hair, skin and brain health.

You can get them from walnuts, flaxseeds, fish, cod liver oil, and avocado, to name a few sources.

I’m sure you’ve heard that omegas (3, 6 & 9) are great for your health and can help alleviate, cure, or ease any number of ailments. Let’s explore.

Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acid is considered one of the essential fatty acids because our bodies cannot make it. It is chiefly famous for being an anti-inflammatory agent, which can ease any number of medical conditions. Additionally, it counteracts the pro-inflammatory properties of omega-6. Regarding hair benefits, omega-3:

  • Increases hair elasticity (less breakage)
  • Nourishes hair follicles
  • Can help re-start hair growth
  • Increases hair strength and thickness
  • Prevent or reverse hair loss
  • Improve flaky/dry scalp
  • Improve scalp circulation

Get omega-3 in your diet with seafood (salmon, sardines, halibut, tuna, herring, mackerel, cod), seeds & nuts (almonds, brazil nuts, flaxseeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds), and fruits & veggies (strawberries, cabbage, broccoli, turnip greens, spinach).

Omega-6

Omega-6 is another essential fatty acid that our bodies cannot produce. It supports brain development, the immune system, and helps regulate blood pressure. When it comes to hair, omega-6:

  • Controls water loss in hair
  • Stimulates hair growth
  • Controls/helps improve eczema and similar skin/scalp conditions

Omega-9

Omega-9 is a non-essential fatty acid because our bodies can generate it from unsaturated fats. Omega-9 helps regulate bad cholesterol and supports immune function. Omega-9 in the hair:

  • Controls water loss in hair
  • Makes hair softer and more pliable

Add some Collagen to your diet

gelatin

Maybe you’ve heard about gelatin/collagen in recent years. It’s become quite the beauty and health hack.

A lot of people know how gelatin powder can help digestion, skin, and joints, and now people are now starting to tout the benefits of gelatin for hair health. It’s great for making your hair grow faster, and helping it remain healthy and robust (and not falling out).

It’s also incredibly easy to add to your routine.

If you have the type of gelatin that’s pictured above, you’ll find that it dissolves easily into any beverage and blends well int your shampoo, too. I add gelatin to my tea and shampoo and have noticed huge benefits over time (my hair, which has been prone to falling out, doesn’t much anymore, if ever).

Here are some of the major benefits of gelatin:

  • It improves hair and nail health and makes them grow faster and stronger.
  • Improves joint and bone health. Our bones and joints are mostly made of collagen, thus consuming collagen in gelatin results in stronger bones, higher bone density, and reduced bone loss.
  • Prevents and treats wrinkles. The collagen in gelatin is the same ingredient that’s used in exorbitantly priced face creams.
  • Provides lots of protein. Gelatin has 6 grams of protein per tablespoon
  • Improves digestive health by promoting healthy stomach acid production. It also helps the stomach acids move from the lining of the stomach to the food that needs to be digestion, preventing gas, bloating and constipation.
  • Induces weight loss with it’s boost to metabolism and propensity to regulate blood sugar levels
  • Reverses allergies by soothing and healing the gut lining

I recommend that you get this green bottle of gelatin, as it dissolves easily and is sourced from a conscientious company.

Aloe vera gel for hair growth & hair loss prevention

aloe vera gel

If you haven’t noticed already, aloe vera is in the vast majority of hair care products available such as hair creams, shampoos, and conditioners.

It is very good for hair and contains over 20 vitamins and minerals that are essential for hair growth.

Here are some major benefits of aloe vera for hair loss prevention:

  • Reduces excess sebum production. Aloe vera stops excess sebum production that can hamper hair growth and follicle health at the root of the hair and cause dirt to pile up. Aloe vera keeps the scalp clean and well moisturized.
  • Promotes new hair growth. If you’ve been losing some hair, you’re going to want to get new hair growth as quickly as you can. Aloe vera activates new hair growth and increases blood circulation to the scalp with its unique enzymes and pH balancing.
  • Prevents hair loss. Aloe vera has been used at the first sign of excessive hair loss and alopecia for centuries for its restorative qualities.
  • Provides great moisturizing. Directly applied to the scalp aloe vera and it’s 20+ minerals and vitamins, and cooling qualities provide a lot of moisture and sustenance.
  • Conditions hair naturally. Aloe vera makes hair soft without any trace of dryness that’s common with conventional conditioners – plus it leaves no greasy buildup behind, either.
  • Prevents dandruff. The cooling qualities of aloe vera help it prevent the dryness that can lead to dandruff. It’s also anti-fungal which provides additional dandruff support.

Along with Aloe Vera home remedies, you can also try hair care products containing Aloe Vera. There are gels, shampoos, conditioners, hair care to name a few. These natural Aloe Vera hair care products are an ideal alternative to commercial hair products which have harsh chemicals in them.

Closing Recommendations for Preventing Hair Loss

Typically hair loss is a slow, gradual process; but sudden hair loss has been known following traumatic events and extreme fear, anxiety or severe reactions to chemicals.

Hair loss can be either temporary or permanent, but the good news is that (in most cases) it is temporary, and the condition will be resolved once the underlying conditions are diagnosed.

Even some so-called “permanent” cases of hair loss can be reversed with the right therapeutic care.

Essential oils can surely be a remedy for hair loss, thinning hair and Alopecia. But it’s also important that you visit a health-care practitioner if you have concerning hair loss.

A doctor can run tests and diagnose whether there is an underlying balance in the body. If there is, in fact, an imbalance (often hormonal), it will need to be addressed to resolve the issue completely.

Drink plenty of water:

Water is an essential part of the human body. The body can function well only if it is well hydrated. The hormones and enzymes in the body can work only if there is the necessary amount of water in the body. At least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day are necessary for the body to function well, and also for proper hair growth. Make sure you have a healthy diet and a regular intake of all the essential nutrients.

Never comb wet hair:

Hair becomes more prone to breakage when it is wet. So, you must avoid combing your just after a bath. You could run your fingers through it to settle your hair. Wait for it to dry out to comb or style it.

Good Sleep for hair growth:

Sleep is an essential part of good health. You need enough sleep to let your body relax. After a hectic routine, even your body needs rest. It is during sleep that most of the tissues are regenerated and rejuvenated. You need a minimum of 8 hours of sleep every day. This is important for staying healthy and fit. Hair growth is also promoted if you get enough sleep.

Now you know what you should do to have good and healthy hair. Choose your favorite remedy and follow it regularly to make your hair thick, strong and long. Also, remember the above tips to take good care of your hair.

Address a possible underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) which can cause thinning hair:  Add sea vegetables like kelp, nori, dulse, kombu, and wakame, all of which are rich in iodine may be helpful to balance this condition.  Avoid drinking tap water since it typically contains fluorine and chlorine, two chemicals that inhibit iodine absorption.  You may also want to supplement with 100 mg or 1 mL of the herb bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) daily.  Work with a qualified holistic health care professional if you suspect a sluggish thyroid gland.

Identify underlying issues

Certain medications like birth control pills, beta-blockers, anabolic steroids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and others may also contribute to problems such as hair thinning and hair loss.

Seborrheic dermatitis and scalp infections cause issues like itchy scalp and mild hair loss. So, identify any underlying issues contributing to hair problems and address them as soon as possible, so they don’t hamper your hair growth efforts.

Biotin can cause problems like breakouts, weight gain, stomach problems

Great Essential Oils website and information! Have you heard that sometimes hair loss is caused by an iodine-deficient thyroid? How do we rub iodine into our scalps?

  2. I have struggled with my hair for a long time now. I am quickly approaching my 30s and I have bad hair quality. Recently, I have also noticed that my hair has stopped growing as it used to. A few years ago I went to the salon on a monthly basis. Now, it takes me almost two months before I even need to cut my hair! I am desperate and I really need help right now. Hair is one of the most important parts of a woman and I don’t want to give up on this one. I went to the doctors but they didn’t found anything wrong with me. The exams I took showed that I am healthy and there’s no reason for this to even happen to me. Please, I really need hair advice urgently!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Liza, if you haven’t had blood work done, I recommend you do so, and make sure your physician orders a FULL thyroid panel that includes your antibody numbers, not just a test for TSH. I have been losing my hair for 2 years, and found out 1 yr ago that I have a low-functioning thyroid. My hair loss has finally begun to slow down since I went on thyroid meds. Didn’t want to do it, have not taken any drugs for anything, so hard to go from being a drug-free zone to taking drugs! But my energy is coming back, weight is starting to come off, and as I said, hair loss is slowing. I had to change to a naturopathic doc since the traditional doc wasn’t doing anything to help me. Made all the difference! Good luck!

A great list of must-use essential oils for hair loss, Loren. Rosemary oil is one of my long-time favorite, it invigorates the scalp and helps fine hair.

I was wondering what is your experience with using castor oil for hair loss and to thicken hair? Would you use only castor oil? Will try your scalp massage recipe!

My team at Viviscal also has blogged about essential oils for thicker hair. This could come handy along with your great recipes!

  6. My daughter has Alopecia Areata orTotalis because she once lost all her scalp hair. Now she has at least I would say less than 20% hair with no eyebrows. We’ve tried medical treatments but she had episodes of resistance to it since she grew her hair back with some bald spots and then loose it again. She’s 11 years old. Her thyroid function is normal. She was diagnosed with Alopecia at age 3 but didn’t loose all of her hair until she turned 8 . Now, Just would like to try natural oil remedies for her. Can I use the aroma therapy oils as ingredients for the Alopecia scalp massage oil?

    1. Michele

I’m so sorry about your daughter and her struggles with her hair. I didn’t get Areata until I was in my early/mid-thirtys. I saw a natural doctor. As you know, Alopecia is an auto-immune reaction to “something”. The doc linked it to a vaccine I received a couple months before I began noticing spots. 3 other people I know also had the same vaccine and ended up with Alopecia. Have you visited with a natural doctor to do a cellular detox with her?

    2. Nichelle

Ms. Toni, I too was diagnosed with both forms of alopecia. My diagnoses was a result of certain hair products and hair styles. I went to a dermatologist and a regime/scalp injections were used and my scalp didn’t respond to years of treatment. A year later a car accident caused me to have to take several different pain medicines and as a result handfuls of hair came out. My scalp was literally bald and smooth to the touch. It appeared that the follicles were completely closed.Devastated I had to cover my scalp using hair tracks. My hairstylist has been very patient and helpful in covering up my bald patches predominately on the top and side of my head. She has basically made me a toupee that is sewn into a swirled braid with the little hair I have on top. (covered by a hairnet to protect my hair from track damage. ) The track hair is attached by the hairnet and looks great . It’s been 6-8 years of dealing with this condition that I finally decided to try essential oil’s . I did my research and eventually went to my local vitamin store and bought a carrier oil such as almond oil, jojoba oil or castor oil and mixed it with 10 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops of peppermint oil, and Rosemary. After 6+ years of total boldness hair began to grow after three months of use . I wore a wig that my stylist made for me during this time.Yes the hair is thin however it’s still hair. Today as I search the Internet for more ideas I’ve decided to add Cedar wood oil also . With your child being so young I would contact your dermatologist to make sure that my concoction won’t be too strong for her scalp. ( I believe it is) Never use the oils without a carrier oil. I pray that this is helpful to you as I know this can be very depressing , discouraging and embarrassing.

  7. Mirabel

Nichelle, thanks for this information really helpful. You are indeed a survivor. Jusg to drop in, wigs also thins the hair out so we need to be mindful how we use them.

  8. Is it safe to mix Rosemary, Clary Sage, Lavender, Peppermint, Cedarwood and Thyme oils together with Coconut & Castor oil? Purpose is to cut hair loss and enhance hair growth. I believe these oils independently work well, but not sure if they can be mixed. Please help. Thanks.

  9. I’ve just recently heard of a castor oil, egg white, and honey treatment that you can mix together.
    Two tbsp. Castor oil,
    I egg white,
    I tsp honey
I’m trying this now and after studying these recommendations am confident they will work.

  10. Annaisha

    Great article Loren !

A joy to read and look at the beautiful pictures .

I will for sure use some of your recommendations.

    Thanks!

  11. Drina Edwards

Good morning. My name is Ms. Edwards. I’ve had alopecia for years now and I would like to know how to go about mixing the oils together for my hair. If you can reach out to me, I would really appreciate it. Is it best to mix them together, or just use one of them? Your information is very helpful and I want to thank you for that! Also, how should I go about using shampoo, is it best to buy it, or make it? Should I use conditioner? I also want to know how often should I use these? Thank you. Ms. Edwards

  12. rosemary had superior antibacterial and anti-inflammatory values compared to other herbs like oregano, spearmint, thyme, peppermint and basil. The antioxidants in rosemary essential oil help combat free radical damage that people today face at increased levels due to pollution and the usage of harsh chemical products. The rich levels of antioxidants in rosemary oil help prevent hair loss and contribute to faster hair growth.

  13. Nice Loren! From your amazing list, I prefer clary sage oil because it has antidepressant effects, antibacterial effects, and stress relief. I selected 100 percent essential oil.

  14. Stacey Lynn Hazard

Is it OK to mix the essential oils together in one scalp massage oil? I’d like to use Rosemary, Cedar Wood, Clearly Sage, Peppermint, Lavender and Thyme. If it is, how much of each oil and how much of a carrier oil would you suggest?
