The Origins of Thieves

Thieves oil has a vibrant history dating back to medieval times. It is believed to have originated due to the Black Plague or Black Death that plagued and raged on throughout most of Europe during the 1300’s. This horrible outbreak claimed the lives of millions of people; 75-200 million lives are believed to have been lost.

Dating back to medieval times spice traders and merchants would import spices throughout Europe. However, when the Black Plague broke out all international trading was halted for fear of contamination.

Suddenly these spice traders and merchants found their profits dwindling and soon needed to find other ways to support themselves and their families.

This blend of oils which helped to bring prosperity to those poor and starving spice traders and merchants who were no longer able to make their living through the sale and trading of herbs instead they resorted to covering their bodies with the Thieves blend and began looting and stealing from the homes of the dead.

Believing that they would not get sick by rubbing vinegar and a mix of certain oils and spices together to rub over their body they began looting the homes of the dead plague victims.

This looting and trading business became very profitable for them until the King of England found out. Wanting to know their secret he sent the police out to capture them.

Once caught the King offered them two options; they could use either hand over the secret formula, or they could be burned at stake. The thieves decided to share their formula, and the king posted it all throughout the land.

There are many stories throughout Europe, at this time in history, that have their own stories about the origin of Thieves; hence the variety of names as well as many recipes with different ingredients. There are even newspaper clippings that can be found from this time in history that have the original stories and recipes printed in them.

The most common Thieves blend has 5 essential oils, not just 4; as one of the names suggests. And today most blends you will find utilize 5 oils.
